Authorities stated they were contacted by a man who discovered a car in Hanau marked with red-colored liquid

Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a statement.

Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.

Officers then discovered multiple other smeared cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Police report early analysis show the fluid was likely human blood.

"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any harm in connection with the event," they commented.

Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the community for tips.

A high-ranking representative stated the attack left him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.

"This act affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, mentioning the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in 2020.
